Aroreretini is the kupu Māori for ADHD, meaning “attention goes to many things.” Inspired by the piwakawaka, it reflects a fast-moving, energetic mind. This performance follows a student navigating school while masking struggles, putting on a brave face while feeling misunderstood and unable to fully be themselves. Their journey moves through frustration, represented by Tāwhirimātea, before finding calm in Rongomātāne. By shedding the mask and finding self-acceptance, transformation becomes possible. Aroreretini challenges deficit-based views, celebrating neurodiversity and highlighting the importance of environments where students feel valued, understood, and free to embrace their strengths.
